How treatments compare

Straight answers on the questions we hear most, written by the team at the Joanna Vargas spas in New York, Brooklyn and Los Angeles.

XERF vs Ultherapy

XERF is our preferred option for clients who want gradual firming with a comfortable appointment and little interruption afterward. Ultherapy works at a deeper layer and may suit more pronounced laxity, but it can involve greater discomfort and tenderness. XERF also gives the skin an immediate refreshed appearance while firmness continues to develop.

XERF vs Thermage

XERF and Thermage both use radiofrequency, but the treatments feel different. Thermage uses a deeper single-pass approach, while XERF builds heat gradually over several passes. We prefer XERF for clients who value comfort, minimal recovery and a refreshed look soon after the appointment.

Hydrafacial vs Custom Facial

A Hydrafacial follows a set machine-based sequence. A Joanna Vargas custom facial begins with a skin analysis, then combines techniques according to what your skin needs that day. We prefer the custom approach when a client has specific concerns or wants the treatment to change as their skin changes.
